The A5 Slim Paper Pocket Notebook from Traveler's Company is built around a simple, quietly brilliant idea: every page is also a pocket. Sixteen sheets of cream MD Paper unfold to reveal 32 individual pockets, each one sized to hold the physical residue of travel - a folded metro map, a museum ticket, a postcard you almost didn't buy. Slip them in as you go, and by the time you're home you have a journal that's also an archive.

The cover is resin-treated paper, which gives it a firmness and slight resistance to wear that plain card could never manage. It doesn't feel plasticky - it feels considered. Embossed into the cover is a kangaroo, the animal Traveler's Company chose to represent this design, each species in their Spiral Ring range standing in for a different material or concept. The kangaroo, naturally, symbolises the pocket.

Inside, the paper is MD Paper in cream, a stock Traveler's Company has developed and refined over decades. It takes ink with very little bleed and almost no feathering, which matters when you're writing in fountain pen or fine-liner. The cream tone is easier on the eye than bright white and gives handwriting a warmth that stark white paper rarely does.

The single spiral ring is bound by hand at the Nagareyama Factory in Chiba Prefecture, roughly 40 kilometres from central Tokyo. The factory has been making notebooks for over fifty years, and the binding process hasn't been automated - each ring is attached individually by a small team of experienced craftspeople. It's the kind of production detail that doesn't show up in a photograph but does show up in how the notebook holds together over time.

At 216 mm tall by 130 mm wide and approximately 18 mm thick, the A5 Slim format is narrow enough to slide into the side pocket of a jacket or the outer compartment of a travel bag, but wide enough to accommodate a standard A5 folded ticket or a half-sheet map without creasing. The gold spiral ring adds a restrained elegance without tipping into ostentation.

This is a notebook for people who still collect things when they travel. Receipts from good meals, torn corners of guidebooks, stickers from guesthouses.
