The STAEDTLER Noris Jumbo 1284 is a coloured pencil built for small hands that are still learning how to hold one. The barrel is extra thick and triangular rather than round, so little fingers naturally settle into the three flat sides instead of sliding around a slim shaft. That shape takes real pressure off a child's grip and makes longer colouring sessions far less tiring.
Inside, the lead is just as substantial. At roughly 4 mm in diameter, it's nearly twice the thickness of a standard coloured pencil lead, which means fewer snaps and less frustration when a child is pressing hard to get strong, saturated colour onto the page. STAEDTLER reinforces that lead further with their A·B·S protective coating, a layer bonded between the lead and the wood casing that absorbs shock and resists breaking if the pencil is dropped, something that happens often in a classroom or at the kitchen table.
The casing itself is made from wood sourced from FSC-certified forests, managed to responsible environmental and social standards, and every pencil is manufactured in Germany to STAEDTLER's usual standard of quality control. The pencils meet EN 71 toy safety requirements, so they're suited to young children as well as older kids and adults who simply prefer a thicker barrel.
Each pencil features STAEDTLER's recognisable star pattern along the barrel and a name field where a child can write their own name, useful for keeping pencils from going missing in a shared pencil case or classroom supply box. The range is available in up to 10 individual colours, so you can build a full set or simply restock the shades that get used up fastest.
For best results when sharpening, Staedtler recommends their Noris jumbo double-hole sharpener (512 128) or the metal double-hole sharpener (510 20), both designed to handle the pencil's oversized diameter without chewing up the wood.
Who it's for: young children learning to write and draw, early years and primary classrooms, anyone who finds a standard-diameter pencil uncomfortable to hold.
