Some inks simply do what they're told. Noir Abyssal does something more.
The flagship shade of Jacques Herbin's Les Encres Essentielles collection, it is a deep, intense black formulated for everyday writing — yet it carries the unmistakable character of a house that has been making ink since the reign of Louis XIV. Founded in Paris in 1670, the House of Herbin is the oldest ink manufacturer in the world, and for over 350 years its name has been synonymous with exceptional quality and French savoir-faire.
The colour itself is the point. As it dries, Noir Abyssal deepens, its rich tint evoking the quality of a tropical night — with low shading and a subtle black sheen that rewards close attention without ever becoming theatrical. It is a black for correspondence, for journaling, for any moment when the writing itself deserves to look its best.
Each box contains seven long standard international cartridges, each holding 1.35 ml of ink. The cartridges measure 7.2 cm in length. The dye-based formulation is vegan, made in France, and delivers a smooth glide with a quick drying time. On quality paper with a medium nib, it dries in approximately 20 seconds — practical enough for left-handers and anyone who values a clean page.
Compatibility
These are long standard international cartridges, compatible with most fountain pens - including those by Jacques Herbin, Esterbrook, Ferris Wheel Press, and Kaweco Perkeo.
They are not compatible with Kaweco Sport, Classic, or Collection models. If your pen uses a piston or converter filling system, the same ink is available in a 50 ml bottle.
A note on paper
Noir Abyssal performs beautifully on fountain pen-friendly papers such as Rhodia, Tomoe River, and Leuchtturm. On inexpensive copy paper, some feathering and bleed-through may occur - as with most quality fountain pen inks, it rewards the paper it's given.
