Pilot Iroshizuku Fountain Pen Ink 15ml - Ama-iro (Sky Blue)
Ama-iro translates simply as "sky," and the name earns its keep. This is a clear, luminous blue that captures the particular quality of a high-altitude sky on a cloudless day - clean, crisp, and saturated without tipping into darkness. It sits in a sweet spot that many fountain pen enthusiasts spend years searching for: unmistakably blue, with no grey muddiness and none of the green cast that pushes some sky blues toward turquoise.
On quality paper, Ama-iro shows medium shading, giving depth and character to longer strokes, and in generous swabs on premium papers a faint pink sheen becomes visible - subtle enough that it doesn't intrude on everyday writing, but a quiet pleasure when it catches the light.
The Iroshizuku Collection
Iroshizuku is Pilot's premium ink line, launched in 2007. The name combines two Japanese words: "iro" (色彩), meaning colour and the pursuit of high standards, and "shizuku" (雫), meaning droplet or dew. Every colour in the range is named after a natural phenomenon, plant, or landscape from Japan - a framework that goes beyond branding to genuinely inform each hue's character and depth.
Ink Characteristics
Ama-iro performs the way a well-made ink should. Flow is wet and consistent, and the ink behaves well across nib sizes - though it rewards a broader nib, where the shading becomes more pronounced. It is well suited to daily writing as well as correspondence, and provides good contrast on both white and ivory paper despite its apparent lightness.
The formula is water-based and low in odour, with the smooth-writing properties Iroshizuku inks are known for. It is compatible with all standard fountain pens that use bottled ink via converter or piston mechanism.
The Bottle
The 15ml size is a convenient format for sampling the range or keeping multiple inks in rotation without committing to a large bottle. The bottle itself is made from heavy clear glass with a wide mouth that accommodates most nibs - including larger ones - making filling straightforward and clean. A recessed well at the base of the bottle ensures you can draw out the last of the ink without tilting or improvising. The glass stopper seals securely. It is, genuinely, a beautiful object to have on a desk.
