The Lunar Sport is Kaweco's take on a pearlescent finish that shifts colour as it catches the light. It's built on the familiar Sport body, the one that's carried a cult following for decades, but with a shimmer effect that changes depending on the angle you're holding it at.
Green tones fade into bronze and back again, which is a genuinely nice thing to notice mid-sentence when you're writing something ordinary like a shopping list.
It comes in two colourways.
Neither is better than the other. It comes down to whether you want understatement or a bit more presence on the desk.
Why the Sport shape still works
Kaweco has been making this octagonal body for a long time, and the design hasn't needed much changing. The octagonal cap keeps the pen from rolling off a desk or a café table, which matters more than it sounds like it should. Capped, it's small enough to disappear into a jacket pocket or a pencil case. Posted (with the cap pushed onto the back while you write), it becomes a full-length pen that sits comfortably in the hand for longer sessions.
Dimensions
The body is made from ABS plastic, which is why the pen feels almost weightless despite being genuinely durable. It's not a pen you need to baby.
The nib
Both colourways are available with a Fine or Medium stainless steel nib, produced in Germany. Fine suits smaller handwriting and gives more precise line control. Medium lays down a touch more ink and suits people who prefer a slightly wetter, more forgiving line.
What sets this pen apart from most plastic Kawecos is the nib unit itself. Instead of the usual friction-fit section, the Lunar Sport uses Kaweco's threaded 060 nib unit, the kind normally reserved for their metal pens.
That means the nib can be unscrewed and swapped out entirely, no tools required, if you decide down the track you want a different width or a different feel. It's a small detail, but it's the difference between buying one pen and buying a pen you can adjust as your handwriting or your preferences change.
Filling it
The Lunar Sport takes standard international short cartridges and ships with one included, so it's ready to write out of the box. If you'd rather use bottled ink, it also accepts the Kaweco Sport converter (sold separately), which lets you draw ink directly from any bottle.
Who it suits
This is a good option if you want a fountain pen that travels well, whether that's in a jacket pocket, a bag, or a desk drawer at work. It also makes a genuinely nice gift for someone who already owns a few pens and would appreciate the finish, or for someone buying their first fountain pen who wants something that doesn't feel disposable.
