Rhodiarama Goalbook Softcover Bullet Journal — A5 Dot Grid
The Rhodia Goalbook is what happens when a serious paper company decides to build a bullet journal from the ground up. Rather than retrofitting a standard notebook with a few extra pages, Rhodia has thought through every element - the paper weight, the page structure, the closure, the bookmarks - and produced something that holds its own against far more expensive alternatives.
The paper is the point
The chief advantage the Goalbook holds over competing bullet journals is its 90 gsm paper. Most brands in this category offer 70 or 80 gsm; the difference is immediately noticeable.
The paper is a brushed vellum, milled in Étival-Clairefontaine, France - ivory in tone, which is easier on the eyes than stark white under artificial light. It handles fountain pen ink, fine liners, and gel pens with equal confidence. Ghosting is minimal. Bleed-through, with most instruments, is essentially non-existent.
The dot grid is spaced at 5 mm, which gives enough structure to keep lines and grids tidy without overwhelming pages with visual noise. The dots are present without being dominant.
Built for how people actually use bullet journals
The Goalbook contains 240 pages in total: 224 numbered dot grid pages, a 6-page table of contents, an undated annual calendar, and undated monthly calendar pages. The undated format is a practical decision — it means the book doesn't become obsolete if you start mid-year or take a break, and it doesn't lock you into a 12-month cycle you may not follow.
Monthly layouts are presented in two formats: a vertical spread and a horizontal spread, each covering January through June on one opening and July through December on another. This gives you genuine flexibility in how you plan. The 6-page index is generous - more than most comparable notebooks offer — and supports the kind of ongoing reference system that makes bullet journaling worth maintaining.
The physical details
The softcover is an Italian leatherette - tactile, flexible, and far more durable in daily use than it might appear. The Rhodia logo is embossed on the cover, which is the right kind of quiet. The book measures 148 × 210 mm (A5) - a format that fits comfortably in a bag without sacrificing writing space.
Two ribbon page markers are included: one in Rhodia's signature orange, and one in the colour of the cover itself. An elastic pen loop accommodates pens ranging from approximately 11 mm to 14.5 mm in diameter. A gusseted back pocket handles loose documents, cards, or receipts. An elastic band closure keeps the book secure in transit.
The binding is glued with a lay-flat spine, meaning the book opens fully without resistance and stays open while you write - a detail that matters more than it sounds over the course of a long writing session.
A note on colour
The Rhodiarama range is available in a considered selection of colours - from understated classics to richer, more characterful options. The leatherette takes colour well, and the covers are consistent in finish across the range.
Specifications
The Goalbook is a well-considered object. It doesn't overclaim or overdesign. It simply works — and the paper, in particular, is worth more than its price suggests.
