Rhodia Composition Notebook
There is something quietly reassuring about a notebook that has been thought through properly. The Rhodia Boutique Composition Notebook takes the well-worn form of the classic American composition book and rebuilds it from the inside out, replacing the mediocre with the genuinely good.
The paper is the point. Each notebook contains 80 sheets (160 pages) of Clairefontaine superfine vellum at 80 gsm, with an exceptionally smooth satin finish that rewards good writing instruments rather than fighting them. It is acid-free, pH neutral, and PEFC-certified, meaning it comes from sustainably managed forest sources. Fountain pens, rollerballs, and fine-tipped markers all perform well here, with minimal bleed and very little show-through. If you write with a fountain pen and have ever been let down by paper that feathers or bleeds, this is a practical and reliable solution.
The binding is a real sewn, canvas-backed thread binding, which allows the notebook to open completely flat at 180 degrees. This is not a small thing. Writing in the gutter of a notebook that springs back on you is genuinely annoying. This one stays where you put it, which makes it comfortable to use on both sides of every page.
The cover is made from flexible, water-resistant coated card in Rhodia's signature orange or a clean matte black. Both are durable under everyday use and recognisable to anyone who takes their paper seriously.
Ruling options are lined (7mm line spacing with a 3cm margin, college ruled) or 5mm grid. The lined version suits those who write primarily in prose or keep journals and correspondence. The grid works well for structured notes, diagrams, or anyone who moves between writing and sketching on the same page.
Rhodia has been producing paper in France since 1932. The Boutique Composition Notebook carries that lineage without making a performance of it.
