Hokusai Playing Cards
A deck of playing cards doesn't usually stop anyone in their tracks, but this one carries some of the most recognisable Japanese art ever made. Katsushika Hokusai spent a lifetime sketching the world around him, producing an estimated 30,000 drawings and paintings across nearly 270 books. This deck draws on that legacy, including imagery connected to his Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji series, home to the print most people know simply as The Great Wave.
Beyond the artwork, it's a genuinely good deck to play with. The cards are printed on 250gsm stock with a varnish and linen finish, giving them enough flex to shuffle cleanly without feeling flimsy. Each box holds the full 52 cards plus 2 jokers, and two extra cards carrying artwork and a short artist biography, so there's a bit of context tucked in alongside the game.
Nice for a card table, a bookshelf, or a gift for anyone who appreciates Japanese printmaking.
