The AL-star has been part of the LAMY lineup for decades, and the Rollerskate edition gives it a colour combination you won't find in the standard range. The barrel and cap are finished in a bright pink anodised aluminium, paired with a translucent blue grip section and a matching blue metal clip. It's a striking pen, but the construction underneath is the same reliable aluminium body LAMY has been making since the AL-star was introduced.
Aluminium is a good material for a daily-use pen. It's lighter than brass or steel, resists dents better than plastic, and won't discolour with handling over time. The transparent grip section is more than decoration too. It lets you see the ink feed working as you write, which is a small detail, but one that fountain pen and rollerball enthusiasts tend to appreciate.
This is a rollerball, not a fountain pen, so there's no nib to worry about and no learning curve. Rollerball ink flows more freely than a ballpoint, giving you a smoother line with less pressure needed on the page. It comes fitted with a LAMY M63 refill in black, medium point (1.0 mm), which is the standard refill for this pen and easy to replace when it runs low.
The clip is worth mentioning on its own. LAMY uses a spring-loaded wire clip rather than a rigid one, so it opens wide enough to fit over a thick notebook cover or shirt pocket without bending out of shape. It's a small engineering choice that makes a real difference in daily use.

Good to know
This is a special edition colourway, produced in limited numbers for a set period. Once current stock sells through, LAMY does not guarantee it will be reissued in the same colours. If you've been wanting to add it to a collection or give it as a gift, it's worth not waiting too long.
The AL-star takes standard LAMY M63 rollerball refills, so replacements are simple to find when the time comes. If you'd prefer a different line width or ink colour down the track, M63 refills are available in fine and medium points.
Suits anyone who wants a well-made, lightweight rollerball with a bit of personality. Comes gift boxed, so it's ready to give as is.
