Jacques Herbin Prestige Caravelle Rollerball - Walnut & Gold

Jacques Herbin Prestige Caravelle Rollerball - Walnut and Gold

There are writing instruments, and then there are objects that genuinely change the experience of putting words on paper. The Jacques Herbin Prestige Caravelle Rollerball in Walnut and Gold sits firmly in the second category. Made in France by one of the world's oldest writing instrument makers, it brings together turned walnut and polished gold-tone appointments in a pen that feels as considered as it looks.

Jacques Herbin was founded in Paris in 1670, originally supplying sealing wax to the court of Louis XIV. By 1798, under the direction of a fourth-generation member of the family, the house had pivoted into fine writing inks, a commitment that continues today under the Clairefontaine Rhodia umbrella. The Caravelle line represents the pinnacle of their writing instrument offer: the Prestige series pairs genuine precious woods with noble metal appointments, and the result is a pen with real material substance.

The Body
The barrel is turned from walnut, a hardwood prized for its warm, medium-dark grain and the way it develops a gentle patina with use. Because walnut is a natural material, no two pens are identical. The grain pattern, figuring, and tone will vary from piece to piece, which means your pen is, in a quiet way, unique. The appointments, including the cap ring, clip, and trim, are finished in polished yellow gold, which complements the warmth of the wood without competing with it.

The pen is substantial in the hand at approximately 47g, with a capped length of around 138 mm and a barrel diameter that tapers gently from approximately 13 mm toward a section of around 11 mm. It sits comfortably between the fingers without being heavy for extended writing sessions.

The Writing System
The Caravelle Rollerball uses standard international fountain pen ink cartridges or a compatible converter, which gives it a meaningful advantage over most rollerballs: you can fill it with any bottled ink you choose, drawing from the full Jacques Herbin range or any other brand that takes your interest. The converter is included. This is an unusually generous ink system for a rollerball, and for anyone who already uses fountain pen inks, it removes the compromise of switching to proprietary cartridges.

A Note on the Wood
Walnut is a living material. Over time, the colour may deepen or shift slightly depending on the light it is kept in and the natural oils from your hand. This is not a flaw; it is how fine wood behaves, and it means the pen becomes more itself the longer you use it. We recommend cleaning the barrel occasionally with a soft, dry cloth rather than any liquid cleaner.

Ink Compatibility
Because this rollerball accepts standard international cartridges and converters, it is compatible with the full Jacques Herbin ink range, as well as inks from Pilot Iroshizuku, Lamy, Diamine, Waterman, Herbin, and most other fountain pen ink brands that use international-format cartridges. If you are already using bottled inks, a converter opens the pen to an enormous range of colour and character.

The Caravelle Walnut and Gold is presented in Jacques Herbin gift packaging and is suited to purchase as a gift or as a considered addition to your own collection.
