Jacques Herbin La Perle des Encres Writing Ink 30ml - Vert de Gris (Green Grey)

Jacques Herbin La Perle des Encres Writing Ink 30 ml | Vert de Gris

There are very few ink houses whose history stretches back more than three centuries. Jacques Herbin is one of them. Founded in Paris in 1670 by a French sailor who brought back formulas from his voyages to India, the house went on to supply ink to Louis XIV, Napoleon Bonaparte, and Victor Hugo. In 1700, Jacques Herbin produced the line now known as La Perle des Encres - The Jewel of Inks - and the standard has not wavered since.

Vert de Gris is one of the more distinctive colours in the collection. The name translates as "verdigris," the grey-green patina that forms on aged copper or bronze, and the ink earns the reference. It reads as a deep teal with pronounced grey undertones - muted, complex, and far more interesting on the page than a straight green. In changing light it shifts character: warmer and more green under artificial light, cooler and almost purely grey in daylight. It is an ink that rewards attention.

On paper, Vert de Gris performs with quiet confidence
It flows reliably from fine and medium nibs, and shading is present even in finer line widths - the ink moves from a pale teal-grey in thin strokes to a much deeper, near-black teal in broader passages and pooled areas. On quality paper the effect is particularly pleasing. It has a quality that suits both daily correspondence and considered writing; not so dark that it loses its character, not so light that it disappears.

The ink is water-based and made with all-natural dyes. It is pH neutral and non-toxic, making it safe to use and gentle on pen internals. It flows smoothly, dries in approximately 20 seconds on standard paper, and cleans easily from pen components. There is no shimmer, no sheen, no iron gall component - just a well-made, dependable ink with a colour that holds its own.

Compatibility and use
Suitable for fountain pens, rollerball pens, glass pens, and dip pens. It uses standard international cartridge format and is compatible with the vast majority of fountain pens. It is not formulated for use with Sheaffer, Parker, Lamy, A.T. Cross, Pilot, Sailor, Platinum, or Aurora proprietary cartridge systems.

The bottle is the classic Herbin "D" bottle - a compact, flat-sided 30 ml glass vessel with a groove across the top surface designed to rest a pen while filling. The shape derives from an old French unit of measure, la demi courtine, and has remained largely unchanged for generations. It is a practical, elegant object in itself.
