Jacques Herbin has been making ink in Paris since 1670, and the La Perle des Encresrange is the range that made the name. The title translates as "The Jewel of Inks" and it is a title the house has earned over more than three centuries. Today the collection runs to 40 colours, each one formulated in France and named with a poet's instinct for language.
Vert Cactus is one of five colours introduced to bring the palette to its current breadth. The inspiration is openly stated by the house: the arid, sun-soaked world of the cactus plant, with its particular quality of green that sits somewhere between vivid and soothing.
On the page, it reads as a clear, saturated mid-green with just enough depth to feel considered rather than cartoonish. It holds up well in finer nibs without washing out, and rewards wet writers and broader nibs with a pleasing richness of colour.
