Jacques Herbin La Perle des Encres Writing Ink | Terre de Feu (Earth Red)
Terre de Feu takes its name from Tierra del Fuego, the remote archipelago at the southernmost tip of South America. It is a place defined by scorched plains, vast open land, and the particular silence of the earth at the edge of the world. This ink carries that character faithfully: a warm, red-tinged brown that shifts with nib and paper, revealing deeper russet tones in broader strokes and a drier, more terracotta quality through finer nibs.
It is not a loud colour. On white paper it reads as a grounded, earthy brown with unmistakable red warmth. On cream or ivory stock, it comes into its own, the contrast softened to something quieter and more personal. Shading is present, particularly with wetter nibs, and the ink rewards time spent with it.
About La Perle des Encres
Jacques Herbin is the oldest name in pen ink in the world. The house was established in Paris in 1670, and the La Perle des Encres ("The Jewel of Inks") range has been produced since 1700. It is the same formula that was used by Louis XIV and Victor Hugo, refined over three centuries and still made in France today. The finishing touches on the bottles remain handmade in Paris.
The 30 ml glass bottles, known as "D bottles" after the old French unit of measure la Demi Courtine, are designed with an integrated pen rest recessed into the top of the bottle. It is a practical detail that anyone who has tried to balance a fountain pen while filling will quietly appreciate.
Formula and Compatibility
Terre de Feuis formulated with all-natural dyes in a water-based carrier. The ink is pH neutral and non-toxic, with a neutral composition that is gentle on pen feeds and metal nibs. It flows smoothly and dries at a reasonable pace on most papers.
Compatible with fountain pens, rollerball pens, glass nibs, dip nibs, reed pens, and brush pens. The ink is also dilutable with water for use in watercolour-style illustration work, where it produces a soft, warm gradient.

A Note on Colour
Terre de Feu behaves differently across paper weights and nib sizes, which is part of its appeal. Wet, broad nibs deepen the colour toward a saturated brown. Finer, drier nibs pull out more of the red. High-quality coated papers will show more shading; absorbent papers will produce a flatter, softer result. If you are using it in a dry pen, expect to see more red. In a wetter pen, expect a warmer, richer brown.
This is an ink worth exploring slowly.
