Great Expectations by Charles Dickens

Pip is a blacksmith's apprentice with no reason to expect much from life, until a convict on the marshes and a mysterious benefactor change his fortunes overnight. Charles Dickens's Great Expectations follows him from a harsh childhood to the drawing rooms of London, where he learns what he actually owes the people who shaped him. It's one of Dickens's most personal novels, and this edition treats it the way the story deserves.

This is Masterpiece Library Edition, a hardback made to be kept rather than read once and shelved out of sight. The covers are cloth quarter-bound and embossed, with iridescent accents that catch the light without shouting about it. Inside, the paper is acid-free and archival quality, so the pages won't yellow or turn brittle the way cheaper editions do after a few years on a shelf. The type size, font, and line spacing have been chosen for comfortable reading rather than squeezed onto the page to save costs, and a ribbon bookmark is sewn in so you're not hunting for a scrap of paper every time you put it down.

Charles Dickens (1812-1870) wrote 15 novels, 5 novellas, and hundreds of short stories over his lifetime, and remains one of the most widely read authors of the Victorian era. Great Expectations, first published in serial form in 1860 and 1861, is often considered his most tightly constructed and emotionally direct work.

This edition suits anyone building a proper library of classics, and it makes a thoughtful gift for a reader who already owns a paperback copy and would appreciate one built to last. It's substantial enough to hold its own on a shelf next to other bound classics, and durable enough that it can be read, not just displayed.
