Dracula by Bram Stoker

Bram Stoker's Dracula is the novel that gave the world its Count: the Transylvanian nobleman who crosses from the Carpathian Mountains to the fog and gaslight of Victorian England, and the small group of friends who set out to stop him. Told through letters, diary entries, and ship's logs, it's a story that built the modern vampire tale from the ground up, and more than a century later it still reads as genuinely unsettling.

This Masterpiece Library Edition is built to be kept, not just read once and shelved. The hard-cover boards are wrapped in an embossed cloth cover with iridescent highlighting, and the spine is foil-stamped to match. A reinforced cloth quarter-binding holds the whole thing together for the long haul, and a satin ribbon bookmark is sewn in so you always know where you left off.

Inside, the pages are printed on premium acid-free paper, so the book will hold its colour and won't yellow or grow brittle with age. The type size, font, and line spacing have been chosen with actual reading in mind, which makes a real difference on a book this length, especially if you're reading by lamplight the way Stoker's characters so often did. At 440 pages, it's a substantial edition, printed on cream-coloured stock that's easy on the eyes for long stretches.

Weighing in at 1.13 kg, it has the heft of a proper hard-cover rather than a paperback pretending to be one. That weight and the archival paper are part of what make it suited to sitting on a shelf for years, whether it's read once a year around Halloween or kept as a permanent fixture in a home library.

This edition suits several kinds of reader. If you already love Dracula and want a copy nicer than the mass-market paperback gathering dust from school, this is that copy. If you've never actually read it and only know the character from film adaptations, this is a good place to start, since the original text still outpaces most of what came after. And if you're buying a gift for someone who reads horror, classics, or gothic fiction, a bound, ribboned, foil-stamped edition reads as considered in a way that a $25 paperback doesn't.
