Maurer & Wirtz has been making fragrance in Germany since 1854, and the original Tabac scent has been a fixture in well-appointed bathrooms since 1959.
Craftsman, launched in 2019, is the house's most considered modern interpretation of that legacy: not a reinvention, but a thoughtful evolution that keeps the spirit of the original and opens it up with fresher, more contemporary lines.
The fragrance belongs to the woody spicy family. Top notes of black pepper, grapefruit and bergamot give an immediate impression that is bright, citric and just slightly sharp. The heart develops through lavender, geranium and tonka bean, while the base settles into vetiver, patchouli and leather. That dry-down is where Craftsman earns its keep: warm, genuinely masculine, and grounded without being heavy.
The opening leans citric and peppery, but as it develops the character shifts toward a relaxed, herbaceous quality.
