Captain Fawcett's Scapicchio Shaving Soap is the result of a collaboration between the British grooming house and Luigi Scapicchio, whose family has been shaving Italy's chins since 1820.

Signor Marco Scapicchio opened his first barbershop that year, and the artisan skills of the trade, including the vintage Italian technique and the Kamisori fixed blade shave, have passed down through five generations since.

The scent draws on the fig and olive groves of Puglia, the Scapicchio family's home region, with a hint of West Indian bay rum worked in for good measure. Bay rum has a long history as a barbershop staple, and here it adds a warm, slightly spiced undertone that keeps the fragrance from tipping too sweet. There's also a personal story behind the blend: Luigi's great-grandfather Vincenzo left Puglia for Chicago in 1910, opened an Italian barbershop there, and went on to cut hair for Al Capone.

The soap itself is a traditional tallow-based formula, made to be worked up with a shaving brush rather than applied straight from a can. Load a damp brush and build the lather directly on the puck, or use a bowl if you prefer, then apply to the face in circular strokes. It produces a dense, cushioning lather that stands up well through a multi-pass shave, which matters for anyone using a straight razor or a fixed blade rather than a cartridge.
