There is a particular satisfaction to a pen that makes no fuss about being good. The Sheaffer VFM 9424 in matte grey with matte black trim is exactly that kind of instrument. The body is metal, finished in a soft matte grey lacquer that feels composed in the hand and resists fingerprints on the desk. Sheaffer's White Dot appears on the clip, the brand's longstanding mark of writing quality, present on Sheaffer pens since 1920. The clip itself is spring metal, firm but not punishing, and holds reliably to a shirt pocket or notebook cover.
Filling is via standard international ink cartridges. Two VFM cartridges are included in the box. Note that this pen is designed for universal cartridges only and does not accept a converter, which is worth knowing before you buy. If you favour bottled ink, the rollerball variant of the VFM may be a more practical choice.
