The Colour
Fuyu-syogun is a cool, low-key blue-grey - crisp and stoic, like an early winter morning of snow and cloud. At times the overall tone shifts toward a pale, cold violet, though look closely and it is unmistakably grey. Shading is medium, with the most noticeable shift between light and deep blue-grey, giving writing a pleasing depth without becoming heavy on the page.
The Name
Fuyu-syogun translates roughly as "rigour of winter" - a personification of the harsh, cold season, and a nod to the clear, biting air of severe winter. The Iroshizuku series takes its name from the Japanese words iro (colouring) and shizuku (droplet), each ink named after an expression of Japanese natural landscape. It is a considered, quietly poetic approach to colour naming, and Fuyu-syogun lives up to it.
Performance
Fuyu-syogun dries in roughly 10 to 15 seconds with a medium nib - a genuinely useful quality. Feathering, bleed-through, and show-through are minimal, and the ink behaves consistently across a range of nib sizes. Water resistance is medium: most of the ink will wash away if wet, though traces may remain. It rinses cleanly from the pen with no staining, making maintenance straightforward.
The Bottle
The bottle is heavy clear glass with a wide mouth that accommodates most nib sizes, and a small conical recess at the base. As the ink level drops, tilting the bottle draws the remaining ink into this recess, making it easy to fill your pen right to the last drop. It looks well on a desk and does not feel like an afterthought.
Practical notes
The 15ml size is well suited to trying a new colour, travelling, or keeping a secondary ink in rotation without committing to a larger bottle. Iroshizuku inks are formulated exclusively for fountain pens and work with both converter and cartridge filling systems. The formula is water-based and low in odour.
