Sheaffer Piston Converter (Push-in Style)
The Sheaffer piston converter is a small but meaningful addition to any fountain pen user's toolkit. It replaces the standard cartridge with a simple screw-action piston mechanism that draws ink directly from a bottle, opening up the full world of bottled fountain pen ink to your Sheaffer pen.
The body is made from transparent smoke-tinted resin, which lets you see at a glance how much ink remains - a practical detail that removes any guesswork mid-writing session. The push-in fitting is designed to seat securely in compatible Sheaffer pens, and the screw-action piston operates with the kind of smooth, controlled resistance that inspires confidence rather than anxiety.
How it works
Lower the nib into your chosen ink, turn the piston knob anticlockwise to expel a small amount of air, submerge the nib, then turn clockwise to draw ink into the reservoir. Wipe the nib, and you're ready to write. The process takes no more than thirty seconds once you're familiar with it.
Compatibility
This converter is compatible with the full range of Sheaffer fountain pens with the exception of the VFM collection, which uses a different fitting system. If you're unsure whether your pen is compatible, Sheaffer's model line - including the 100 Series, 300 Series, Legacy, and Expressions collections - all accept this converter without modification.
Why use a converter?
Proprietary cartridges are convenient, but they limit your ink choices to whatever the manufacturer offers in that format. With a converter, you can use any bottled fountain pen ink - including limited editions, Japanese inks, or iron gall formulations - giving you far greater control over colour, flow, and character. It also reduces single-use plastic waste, which matters to many of our customers.
In practical terms
The converter holds a modest ink reserve suitable for extended writing. It is not the largest capacity converter on the market, but it is well-matched to the pen designs it serves. Filling takes moments, cleaning is straightforward under running water, and the transparent body makes it easy to flush the reservoir fully before switching inks.
