The Schmidt 5888 is not a compromise refill. It is the cartridge that many of Europe's better pen manufacturers fit as standard, and the one that discerning pen users specify when they want the writing experience their pen was designed to deliver.
The 5888 is built around a metal tube - a detail that matters in two ways. The additional weight gives the refill better balance inside the pen body, and the metal construction holds more ink than an equivalent plastic tube, meaning longer service between replacements.
The ceramic tip
The defining feature of the 5888 is its ceramic ball. Most roller-ball refills use steel, which performs well initially but wears subtly over time - the tip softens, the stated line width drifts, and the tactile feedback changes.
Ceramic is significantly harder and stable, holding its rated width session after session. If you have chosen a Fine because you want a Fine, it will remain one.
The safety technology
Schmidt's "Safety" designation refers to the refill's resistance to dry-out. The 5888 is engineered for use in retractable or capless pens and will not dry out if left uncapped. For pen users whose preferred pen lacks a sealing cap, or who simply tend to leave caps off between writing sessions, this is a meaningful practical advantage over standard rollerball cartridges.
Ink character
The ink is water-based, which gives it the smooth, low-friction flow that separates a quality rollerball from a ballpoint.
Black and blue both dry to a clean, legible finish across a range of paper stocks.
The green, available in Medium only, is a well-saturated mid-tone - neither pale nor garish.
Choosing your tip size
Compatibility
The 5888 fits all rollerball pens using the international size refill format, making it one of the most broadly compatible cartridges available.
Compatible brands include Acme, Aurora, Caran d'Ache, Conklin, Delta, Diplomat, Faber-Castell, Hugo Boss, Lamy, Montegrappa, Monteverde, Pelikan, Retro 51, Rotring, Visconti, Waterman, and many others.
Each refill measures 110.6mm in length with a body diameter of 6mm. If you are unsure whether your pen accepts this format, those two measurements are the ones to check before ordering.
