Maison Herbin was established in Paris in 1670, making it one of the oldest ink houses in the world. Its founding aim was to give body and colour to our thoughts - a philosophy that still shapes every ink it produces. These Prestige cartridges are the product of that long tradition, formulated in France and designed to perform beautifully in the hands of anyone who takes writing seriously.
The Colour
Terre d'Ombre is a burnt-earth brown with fallow undertones and reddish highlights - sophisticated, warm, and beautifully intense. It is the kind of brown that reads as considered rather than plain: earthy without being muddy, warm without veering towards red. On the page, it appears lighter and more nuanced in fine writing than it does in broad swabs, where it deepens considerably. The result is an ink that rewards good paper and a well-matched nib.
Ink Properties
Terre d'Ombre is water-based, uses all-natural dyes, and is pH neutral and non-toxic. It flows smoothly with an average flow rate and dries in approximately 20 seconds on quality paper with a medium nib. Shading is subtle, with no sheen or shimmer - this is a clean, unaffected ink that lets the act of writing speak for itself. Water resistance is low, so the warm reddish tones will wash away first if wet, which is worth knowing if permanence is a priority.
The ink is finely filtered to protect converter and feed mechanisms, and flows consistently without clogging. It performs best on fountain-pen-friendly papers such as Rhodia and Clairefontaine. On lower-quality papers, feathering may occur, so it rewards being paired with a decent notebook.
The Cartridges
This box contains seven large international cartridges, each holding approximately 2ml of ink. The international sizing means they are compatible with the vast majority of fountain pens on the market - from everyday writers to finer European and Japanese instruments. For those who prefer cartridge convenience over bottled filling, this format offers a clean, fuss-free way to keep writing without interruption.
Made in France
Jacques Herbin inks are made in France, and the Prestige line represents the house at its most considered. The formulations are vibrant, the colours are named with the kind of poetic care that a nearly 360-year-old Parisian maison tends to bring to things, and the quality is consistent across the range.
Terre d'Ombre is an excellent choice for daily correspondence, journaling, and anyone drawn to earthy, classical tones that feel timeless rather than trendy. It suits italic nibs particularly well, where its subtle variation in line width brings out just enough character without demanding attention.
Compatibility: Fits all standard international fountain pen cartridge systems. Not suitable for proprietary cartridge systems (e.g. Pilot, Lamy, Sailor, Pelikan).
