Jacques Herbin Prestige Ink Cartridges "The Essentials" – Ambre de Baltique

Ambre de Baltique is a golden, solar yellow with a warm amber undertone that shifts beautifully depending on the paper and nib you write with. It produces medium shading, which means your letterforms gain quiet depth and dimension without veering into ostentation. Writers who use it for ink wash or illustration describe the colour as quasi-solar, with a translucent bronze quality that mirrors the luminosity of the resin it is named after. On white paper it reads as a rich, honeyed gold. On cream paper it settles into something altogether more antique and considered.

The Ink
Ambre de Baltique is a water-based ink made from all-natural dyes, pH-neutral and non-toxic, with an average flow and a dry time of around 20 seconds on a medium nib. It is fast-drying and lightfast, though it is not waterproof, so it rewards careful handling of finished pages. The formulation includes a humectant to limit drying at the nib and a preservative to maintain ink quality over time. The result is an ink that flows cleanly, resists clogging, and performs consistently across extended use.

The House
Founded in Paris in 1670, the House of Herbin is the oldest ink manufacturer in the world. For over 350 years, its name has been synonymous with exceptional quality and French savoir-faire, having supplied King Louis XIV and other significant figures throughout history. Baltic Amber belongs to the Essentielles collection, a palette of bright, intense colours conceived for everyday use and made entirely in France.

The Cartridges
Each box contains seven cartridges in the standard international long format, each holding 1.35 ml of ink. Cartridge length is 72 mm. These standard international long cartridges fit many fountain pens, but they are not compatible with Pilot, Lamy, Sailor, Platinum, or other proprietary-format pens. They are compatible with Jacques Herbin and Ferris Wheel Press pens. The box is resealable, which keeps unused cartridges protected and makes storage tidy.

Who It Is For
Ambre de Baltique suits anyone who finds blue and black inks uninspiring but is not ready to commit to something theatrical. It works beautifully for personal correspondence, journalling, annotation, and sketching. Calligraphers will appreciate how the colour responds to line variation, deepening in broader strokes and becoming almost delicate in finer ones. It is also a considered gift for the fountain pen enthusiast in your life.
