Pilot iroshizuku Fountain Pen Ink Cartridge - Shin-kai

Pilot Iroshizuku Fountain Pen Ink Cartridges - Shin-kai (Deep Sea)

Shin-kaimeans deep sea, and the name earns its keep. This is a blue-black ink that draws its character from ocean depths where sunlight doesn't reach - cool, serious, and quietly complex. It writes with a blue that leans toward the darker end of the spectrum, and on quality paper it rewards attention with subtle shading that reveals itself slowly, the way the sea does.

This is Pilot's Iroshizuku line brought into cartridge form. Iroshizuku, a compound of the Japanese words for colour and droplet, is one of the most respected ink ranges in the world of fine writing. Each colour in the collection takes its name and character from the natural landscapes and plants of Japan, and the depth of each hue reflects that source. Shin-kai is not a simple blue-black. It has genuine tonal range, and writers who pay attention to how ink behaves on the page will notice it.

The cartridges are compatible with all Pilot and Namiki fountain pens that accept ink cartridges, including the Vanishing Point, Custom 74, Metropolitan, Kakuno, and Explorer, among others. They use Pilot's proprietary high-capacity cartridge format, which holds more ink than a standard international cartridge and is straightforward to install. If you have a Pilot pen fitted with a converter, you can also use an ink syringe to refill an emptied cartridge from a bottle of Shin-kai, making the cartridges more versatile than they might first appear.

The packaging is designed to echo the look of the iconic blown-glass Iroshizuku ink bottles. The inner tray slides out with an internal latch that prevents it from pulling free entirely - a considered detail for something that could easily have been a plain cardboard box. Each cartridge is individually labelled with the ink name, which matters more than it sounds when you are storing multiple colours.

This pack of six makes a gift that is easy to get right. For someone who already writes with a compatible Pilot pen, it is immediately useful. For someone who is newer to fountain pens, it is an accessible way to experience what a serious ink from a serious maker looks and feels like on the page.
