Some colours carry a geography. Bleu Austral is one of them.
Named for the turquoise reflections of the South Seas, it sits in a register that is difficult to pin down precisely: a deep teal leaning toward turquoise, radiating and intense, with a quality that pen enthusiasts tend to describe as haunting. On the page it reads as unmistakably blue, yet with enough warmth and depth to feel unlike anything from the standard palette. It is the kind of colour that makes you slow down and look at your own handwriting.
These cartridges come from Maison Herbin, established in Paris in 1670 - a house whose original purpose was to give, in their own words, body and colour to thought. Jacques Herbin himself was a sailor who returned from voyages to India with formulas for inks and sealing wax, going on to earn the patronage of French royalty, including Louis XIV and Napoleon Bonaparte. Over 350 years later, the standard has not slipped.
The formulation itself is worth understanding. Each cartridge holds 1.35 ml of ink, composed of water, a humectant that limits drying at the nib, and a preservative that maintains quality over time. The ink is finely filtered to prevent clogging - an important detail for anyone who has dealt with the frustration of a blocked nib. The result is a consistently wet, smooth flow that performs reliably across nib sizes and paper weights.
The cartridges are international standard size, which means they are compatible with the vast majority of cartridge-accepting fountain pens, from entry-level writers to fine European instruments. Each box of seven is resealable, keeping unused cartridges clean and protected between writing sessions. Made in France.
Bleu Austral is well suited to everyday correspondence, journaling, and the slower pleasures of calligraphy. The colour is distinctive enough to elevate a handwritten note without tipping into the eccentric, and the ink's smoothness makes it genuinely enjoyable to use rather than merely decorative.
