Vert Empire takes its name from a particular moment in French history: Napoleon Bonaparte's proclamation as Emperor on 2 December 1804 at Notre-Dame de Paris. The colour references the laurel wreath, a symbol of victory carried forward from the Greeks and Romans through the Middle Ages, and depicted in Jacques-Louis David's painting Le Sacre de Napoléon. It is a quietly significant shade with a story behind it.
The ink itself is a deep, mossy green with low shading. It dries in approximately 40 seconds on Rhodia paper using a medium nib, with an average flow that suits most writing styles.
The Ink
Vert Empire is water-based and formulated with all-natural dyes. It is non-toxic, pH neutral, lightfast, and flows smoothly through a nib without skipping or pooling. The neutral pH makes it particularly well-suited to both modern and vintage fountain pens. There is no sheen, no shimmer, and no iron gall - just a composed, restrained green that reads as sophisticated in formal correspondence and equally at home in a journal.
The Tin
The six cartridges are housed in a cylindrical metal tin, durable and compact enough to carry in a pen case or travel bag. The tin is a small but considered detail - it keeps cartridges protected and together, and feels more considered than a paper sleeve.
Compatibility
These are international standard short cartridges.
They fit a broad range of fountain pens including Acme, Ancora, Caran d'Ache, Cartier, Conklin, Conway Stewart, Delta, Faber-Castell, Montblanc, Montegrappa, Monteverde, Omas, Pelikan, Rotring, S.T. Dupont, Stipula, Visconti, and Yard-O-Led, among many others.
They do not fit pens that use proprietary cartridge systems, including Parker, Cross, Waterman, Aurora, Lamy, and Pilot. If you are unsure, check your pen's documentation or compare the cartridge size before purchasing.
About Jacques Herbin
Herbin was established in 1670 and holds the distinction of being the oldest name in formal ink production in the world. The house counts Napoleon Bonaparte and Victor Hugo among its historical users. The Jewel of Inks line was created by Jacques Herbin in his shop on the Rue des Fossés Saint-Germain in Paris in 1700. More than three centuries later, the inks are still made in France to the same exacting standards.
