White Nights and Other Stories | Gilded Pocket Edition
Dostoevsky wrote White Nights when he was only twenty-six, and it remains one of his most quietly devastating stories. Over four white nights, the pale, endless twilight evenings of a Saint Petersburg summer, a lonely young dreamer meets Nastenka, a woman waiting for a promise to be kept. What follows is a conversation about hope, memory and the particular ache of loving someone who cannot love you back in the same way. It is Dostoevsky before the great novels, before Raskolnikov and the Karamazovs, but all the emotional precision is already there.
This edition brings White Nights together with two companion pieces from the same period: A Faint Heart and The Dream of a Ridiculous Man. Both carry the same interest in the inner life, in characters who think and feel too much for their own comfort, and both reward a second reading as much as a first.
The translation is Constance Garnett's, still the version most readers come to Dostoevsky through, and still the one that captures his restless, confiding tone.
This particular edition is part of the Arcturus Ornate Classics series, and it is made for people who want their books to look as good as they read. It is a genuine pocket hardback, compact enough to slip into a coat pocket or a small bag, with a foil-embossed cover design, silver gilded page edges and endpapers designed specifically for this title. A facsimile of Dostoevsky's own signature appears on the title page, a nice touch for anyone who collects classic editions. The paper stock is a warm ivory rather than stark white, which suits the period of the writing and is kinder on the eyes for long reading sessions.

It works equally well as a thoughtful gift for someone who loves Russian literature, a small self-indulgent treat, or an addition to a growing collection of the Ornate Classics series. The format makes it genuinely useful too: small enough to carry, sturdy enough to survive a bag, and handsome enough to sit on a shelf once it's been read. If you've only known Dostoevsky through the longer novels, this is a short, accessible way into his writing, and a good one to return to.
