Utagawa Hiroshige is the artist most responsible for introducing the Japanese landscape to the wider world. Working in the Ukiyo-etradition during the first half of the nineteenth century, he captured the roads, rivers, bridges and seasons of Japan with a softness and clarity that later shaped the work of Van Gogh, Monet and Whistler. This 2027 calendar brings a selection of his finest woodblock prints into a format built for everyday use on the wall.
Each month opens with a full-page reproduction of one of Hiroshige's landscapes, facing a full-page calendar grid for that month, so the image is never cropped or crowded by dates. The double hung format is unusual among wall calendars: both halves get equal space, which means the art reads as art rather than as decoration squeezed around a grid.
The calendar is printed in Australia on a textured, antique white paper stock that suits the muted, atmospheric colour palette of Hiroshige's prints. The paper is acid free, chlorine free and sourced from responsibly managed forests. Pages are bound along the top edge with antique brass wire, so each month lies flat once turned back and the calendar hangs cleanly against the wall.
Public holidays for Australia and New Zealand are marked on the grid, making this a practical planning tool as well as a year of art for the wall.
