Gould travelled through Australia in the 1830s cataloguing species that were, at the time, largely undocumented by European science, and his detailed plates are still referenced by birdwatchers, naturalists and collectors more than a century and a half later.

The calendar uses a double hung format, with a full page illustration sitting above a full page monthly grid. Rather than squeezing in a small thumbnail image, each month gets its own dedicated artwork, so the bird is the focus rather than an afterthought squeezed in beside the dates.

It's printed on a textured, antique white paper stock that suits the age of the illustrations, and bound with antique brass wire so it sits flat against a wall or the back of a door without curling at the edges. Both Australian and New Zealand public holidays are marked in, which is a small but genuinely useful detail if you're planning around long weekends or sending it as a gift to someone across the Tasman.

The paper is acid free and chlorine free, sourced from responsibly managed forests, and the whole calendar is printed here in Australia.

Specifications:

Format: Double hung, full page illustration with full page calendar grid

Size: 24 x 33.5 cm

Binding: Antique brass wire

Paper: Textured antique white stock, acid free, chlorine free, responsibly sourced

Holidays: Australian and New Zealand public holidays included

Artist: John Gould (1804–1881)

Printed in Australia

Good to know:
Because of the double hung layout, this calendar needs a reasonably tall spot on the wall to show both the image and the grid at once. It makes a good gift for bird lovers, gardeners, or anyone who appreciates natural history illustration, and it works just as well as a practical calendar as it does a piece of seasonal wall art.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0345/4160/0903/files/B-VE-D27-JG1-M_Vevoke_Medium_Calendar-Australian_Birds-John_Gould.jpg?v=1793423935
