Everyone knows that smell of damp soil after rain. Properly known as "petrichor," it's actually the smell of the chemical geosmin, which is produced by spores in the ground.

Here at The Stray Whisker, we really love that smell, so we where really excited to hear the Barrister & Mann decided to make a shaving soap and aftershave version!

Barrister & Mann's Petrichor soap and aftershave smell like walking through the forest after a brief storm.

  1. Understated and rustic

Posted by Chris Bonney on 25th Jun 2017

I work in the coffee industry and do a lot of aroma evaluation, so I'm always on the lookout for understated scents.

Anything stronger than bay rum and I get turfed out of the lab. Petrichor certainly fits that brief; mild and sweet with a sillage that goes no further than the person who sits next to me on the bus.

    So why no fifth star?

Well, there's a bit of mustiness to the scent of damp earth. Where I want my workday scent to say, "Fresh and ready to meet any challenge," this says something like, "Time to sit on the verandah with a beer and smell the rain coming in." I never regret wearing it and, as with everything B&M, the performance is excellent. And the beautiful label art looks swell on my dresser.
