Barrister & Mann Shaving Soap - Petrichor

Everyone knows that smell of damp soil after rain. Properly known as "petrichor," it's actually the smell of the chemical geosmin, which is produced by spores in the ground.

Here at The Stray Whisker, we really love that smell, so we were very excited to hear that Barrister & Mann decided to make a shaving soap and aftershave version!

Barrister & Mann's Petrichor soap and aftershave smell like walking through the forest after a brief storm.

  1. Petrichor?

Posted by Phil on 9th Jun 2017

I had read some reviews about this elsewhere and had to try it.

Like all Barrister and Mann Soaps I have had, it lathers up well and is slick on the skin. The scent (to me) was wonderful. I think it could be a take it or leave it scent, but for me this is one of my top scents, up there with "Soaps of Awesometown" and APR "Winterfell" and "Mycroft".

The scent seems to linger which is nice as well.

  2. Don't miss out this time

Barrister and Mann's original Petrichor - in the sadly departed Tre Citta vegan formula - was my first exposure to artisan shave soap, and it blew me away. The performance and the earthy, evocative scent, were immensely impressive. At the time there was a lot of argy-bargy in the shave fora about whether this was REALLY the scent of earth after rain, and the general feeling seemed to be negative.

Three years later everybody wishes they'd bought Petrichor (a term coined by two Australian scientists). But that's ok because it's back, now in the Glissant base.

The scent is nearly identical to the original - maybe a touch sweeter - simply the scent of damp earth. If previous commentators are to be believed, you may miss whatever forest or timber notes you associate with that description.

The Glissant base performs as well as the Tre Citta, which is to say, perfectly. The packaging is exquisite and makes me want to throw away all my other shave soaps. Heck, it makes me want to throw away all my FURNITURE and just live in an empty flat with only a razor and a single, perfect tub of shave soap.
